Whats Your Favorite Part of Mandarin
What is your favorite part of Mandarin? My favorite part of Mandarin would have to be the various parks we have in the area. Yes, all areas of Jacksonville has some great public parks but I think Mandarin Park next to Julington Creek offers a wide variety of things for the locals to do including walking the trails, playing on the playground, fishing off the dock or even putting in your boat into the river. The park’s equipment is fairly well maintained and the park is almost always clean. There are lots of trees that offer shade and there are several spots that you can sit by a pond and relax. Burnett Park is a great place to shoots some hoops, play some baseball or even bat around a tennis ball. There is a small kids playground, a concession stand and even a community center. This park is a favorite among Little Leaguers during the Spring and Fall baseball season. This an older park and there use to be a horse show area with bleachers, a ring and announcers tower but that was demolished to make room for more baseball diamonds. Now none of these things are really unique in Jacksonville but they are special to the local residence.
The other question I wanted to pose this time is; What do you think we can do to improve the area? Mandarin has been growing by leaps and bounds over the last 20 years and a lot of changes have been happening. But are they changes for the better or just giving way to urban sprawl? Just about every livable space in the Mandarin area is now occupied with either houses, apartments, assisted living facilities, churches and stores of one kind or another. Is this really progress? Even Greenland Road has been completely developed. What could or should we do about this? Think about it and if you have something constructive to add please feel free to comment below.
Save Our Parks
If you haven’t been to a city, state or federal park lately you should put together a little picnic, gather the kids and/or some friends and visit one this weekend. There are a wide variety of parks and recreational areas available to us now but they are on the budgetary chopping block and may not be very soon. Most of the city parks are free or have very low-cost services for the residents of the area. They are being maintained by the government and some volunteers. I cannot tell you how many times I have taken my kids to the various parks around town to spend the morning, afternoon or the whole day just being in a natural setting away from home. We never really have any extra money so these places are where we go to have some fun and spend some time away from the distractions of TV, gaming consoles, etc. Continue reading
Palmetto Leaves South
The Palmetto Leaves Park has two entrances. One is on Greenland Road and is called the North Entrance and has a kids playground, picnic tables, paved walking trails and baseball diamonds. We will get more pictures and video of that park very soon. Today we went to the South entrance on St Augustine Road that only has one picnic table with Bar B Q grill, a bathroom and small floating dock to put in your canoes or kayaks. We took some pictures of the park about a year and a half ago and today we took some video of the park for you to enjoy. You can fish from the dock and my nephew says there are some bream and catfish to catch. Continue reading

Updates to website
Good day to ya! We have added some files for our subscribers to use as well as adding more pictures to the slideshows on the pages. Our main focus this month has been the day care facilities, public parks and public schools in the Mandarin and Fruit Cove Areas (AKA St. Johns, Florida). These zip codes are for 32217, 32223, 32257, 32258 and 32259. The listings are in acrobat reader format, separated by zip codes and then alphabetized. The parks listing for 32259 is not complete yet and we are working on it. Hopefully, it will be done in a few days. The schools and day care center listings are complete however.
You can access these pages through either the page listing on the sidebar, the tabs in the middle top part of each page or just click on the links to the pages below:
We hope you find the listings useful and comment if you are a subscriber or just sign out guestbook!
Cheers!
Parks in the Mandarin Area
We have lived in the Mandarin area for a very long time. I have 4 children and now a grandchild so I have used almost all of the parks in this area included in the zip codes 32217, 32223, 32257, 32258 and 32259. We are revisiting all of them for this blog to take pictures and to give reviews. The most recent one that we have used is:

Last year my youngest daughter wanted to learn to play baseball so we signed up with the Mandarin Athletic Association and she was placed on team. The fees were reasonable and the season was short as it was Fall. We liked the coaches and they were patient with the newcomers. She was the one of the only 2 or 3 girls that tried out that season. But the coaches were great and the other members of the team pretty much took her in stride. All of the practices and games were played at Burnett Park which has 6 baseball fields, 4 tennis courts, 2 basketball courts and a children’s jungle gym for the younger kids to play on. They also have a snack bar opened during the games with the usual hotdogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks and ice cream. The bleachers are all metal and pretty cold during the late fall and early winter when she played. The public bathrooms need some repair especially those near the tennis courts. Every time we went was not on a trash day or it was late in the afternoon after quite a few teams had practiced. I had hoped to get a collection of volunteers together to keep it clean but that was a wash. The fields are kept nice though and the children’s equipment seem to be in good repair.
We had a good time after my daughter got more comfortable with her teammates and with the rules of the game. She even managed to hit a few during the later games with a little help from Mandarin Mill where they have a batting cage and practices. Sadly, my daughter did not want to play baseball anymore because she had some kind of falling out with one of the players during the tryouts in the spring. But maybe next year she will want to play softball with the girls!

The park is opened all year round. And you can play or practice on the fields at anytime unless there are team practices. The park has some old oak trees for shade and pine trees to screen the traffic noise coming off of I-295. There is a community hall on the premises but we have never used that. The park in located in the middle of an established community and not very close to any major arteries so if you are not familiar with the Mandarin Area you are going to want to “GOOGLE MAP IT” on your first try. There is a care-taker onsite for any problems. Of course, there is no admission charge for any of the city parks. There is ample parking unless of course it’s baseball season.
Something you may not know about Burnett Park is that the area to the west side of the park use to be a Horse Training and Show Area. When we first moved to the area the park had two sides separated by a screen of pine trees. The pine trees are still there but the horse track, tower and bleachers are gone and have been replaced by two more baseball diamonds with dug-outs and practice boxes.
